Mission: To put the power of law in people’s hands.

Where they work: Mozambique, Kenya, Sierra Leone, India, Myanmar & the US

Our partnership:  We have supported Namati since 2017 with unrestricted grant funding from our sister non-profit Hampshire Foundation.

Namati seeks to advance justice by helping people to understand, use and shape the laws that affect them. To do so, Namati partners with civil society organisations to develop and implement community-based legal empowerment strategies that address urgent global challenges. Community paralegals – or ‘barefoot lawyers’ – work with the communities to raise awareness and assist in the implementation of their rights. One key drive is to help communities protect their lands and document their land rights, so as to protect them from land-grabs and safeguard their resources, which they depend on for their livelihoods.
Namati collects data on every case and uses that information to advocate for large-scale reforms that can then positively affect whole populations.
